fubb, you can link rip to computer using 'hex' mode without the cable and see all 8 signals in the mixer and any audio app you use.

DF Manual ver 4.0 page 15
Quote
If Dark Fire connects to the RIP computer interface:
 Green: Piezo pickup output blend is on, Piezo EQ is off (“Live” mode).
 Blue: Piezo pickup output blend is on and Piezo EQ is on (“Live” mode).
 Light blue (cyan): Hex outputs are enabled (“Recording” mode). You must enable Hex
Output Mode for RIP to see the hexaphonic string inputs.

This is correct of course. Removed my prior idiotic response. Have been reading so much on VG & MIDI etc my mind was in a single track mode. Apologies.

I need one of these.  Had I researched the fact before I bought the DF, I wouldn't have traded in my GK2A.

Unfortunately we are still  extremely short of the minimum quantity the cable shop requires for ordering these.
We need 100 minimum.

So at this hour - i would contact Gibson and ask:

"When can i buy the promised Dark Fire RIP to Roland GK-13 Cable?

Its 10 months now since this necessary product accessory was announced. Where is it?"

Maybe we should consider pursuing legal action with Gibson - and demand they inform us of a delivery date for this promised Dark Fire RIP to Roland GK-13 Cable!

Many of us never would have bought this guitar, if we knew the Dark Fire RIP to Roland GK13 cable was never going to materialize!

... Or we can take the constructive approach and deal with the issue ourselves. Not trying to be a pest here but simply offering another path ...

Clearly there are less than 100 people who are interested in this thing for now or else we would be getting the pro-built option underway. Seems like some of us, perhaps 10 perhaps more of us are able to build these things thanks to your guidance.

How about we each pledge to help out 2 or 3 fellow FGNers near us? I am sure we are all very busy people and are not interested in turning this into a little business but I am also sure we can each make couple more cables if we're able to make one.

This is exactly what I've done and already sent a cable to a friend who needed it. I think I can do the same perhaps for two more members. So in the name of Karma, VG-99 bliss and all the sonic goodness to come from soldering-challenged members of FGN ... Lets start a solder-it-forward campaign...
.
  • First two [active] members to PM me will get a cable sent to them by Monday. I think the material cost + postage will be about $50 payable by PayPal.
  • Please only ask for it if you are unable to make one yourself.
  • Please understand that I am only an amateur and the cable I produce may not be anywhere near what Gibson might produce one day or what Elantric might be able to source for us professionally at some point.
  • Last but not least, I will give priority to active, contributing FGN members who are willing to help others and have done so in their posts in the past. I think as a community we should all try to chip in one way or another.
.
.
So there you go. I hope this campaign works. All the best.

Hi, This is my first post in any sort of forum - so I hope it gets to the correct section!

I have a dark fire / VG99 / VG88 / VG33 and the possibility of using them together was one of the reasons I got the dark fire. I've been badgering Gibson & my dealer about the promised RIP to Roland GK13 pin cable but it seems like there isn't going to be an official one full stop.

If anyone can supply me with a diy / home made cable I would be very grateful & would shower you with financial & spiritual reward.

Hopefully yours  Phil  -  fourdogsdancing@btinternet.com

MCK,

If my new home brew one doesn't work out I would be interested in joining your collective. I also have an alternative to my home made one by way of a music shop tech I trust and have know for years.

He may be induced to make more if it is a success.

Fourdogsdancing I can ask him about doing one for you as you are in the UK too.

I can also PM or email you all the diagrams and UK sources for parts etc I have gathered up, if you want to go DIY or have a tame tech near you that can solder worth a damn, that would be the way to go if you don't solder much.

Most of the diagrams etc are available on this site though if you dig about.

For me my eyes are shot and don't solder enough to do a great job. I have made one cable which does work but has an issue I am looking at in order to refine it.

Glad you can work one up. I think getting the tech to build more is an excellent idea.

MCK & all -

Does anyone have one of these cables that actually works?   Can I see a pic?

If so, based on what set of parts?  Where purchased?

If I had a good idea, a good set of parts, I'll build one & post the step-by-step pix.  But frankly, not being THAT adept with a soldering gun, and not even yet finding any place to buy the proper bill of materials that I'm confident will work, I'm not sure where to start.

Hate to commit if I don't really know what to do...

I've tried swapping notes with Digikey, not much luck.  The big sticking point there is the 100' of cable minimum...   Enterprising soul I am, I tried to get them to sell a bundle with 15' cable lengths...  No response yet to that latest idea.   I've sent the cable BOM .pdf to a couple of places that make cables.   No responses yet from them either.

The plans with all parts with pics are in the download area.

I own one  - works great.

The cable could be short - just long enough to go between RIP and your GK 13 gear (VG-99)

Simply use an old printer cable  - cut off the ends.

The best version would be to obtain an old Apple RS-422 cable and cut off one end and install a 13 pin DIN.

Elantric, you are far more confident at this stuff than I am.  I simply need more detail than that...   It's kinda like telling someone who whose battery won't hold a charge, "Just swap out the alternator!".

I've checked with a couple of cable-making outfits, first quote in looks like:
    5 will cost $75 each, $375
    20 will cost $59 each, $1180
    50 will cost $53 each, $2650

3 weeks delivery time, after approval of first test unit.

(Cable Manufacturing Technologies, Concord, CA)

I'm tempted....   Whaddy'all think?
